Dowsing (radiesthesia)

Dowsing, or radiesthesia, is a holistic investigation carried out in nature and on the human body, with the aim of preventing disorders and illnesses.

What is dowsing?

The word “radiesthesia” comes from two roots, one Latin, radius, “ray”, and the other Greek, aisthesis, “sensitivity” or “perception”. Coined in the early 1920s, it names a practice that was used in the Middle Ages and even earlier: it dates back roughly to 2500 BC and was practised in the East, especially in China, and in ancient Egypt. In the West it spread from France to the rest of Europe and to America.

Dowsing is the practice which, by picking up the radiation that every body or substance gives off, makes it possible to discover hidden bodies or substances and to know their location, extent, nature, kind and quality, and the influence they exert on one another. According to these theories all bodies emit radiations that can be perceived and signalled through the use of particular means or tools.

It was 1913 when the French Abbé Mermet presented a new tool, the pendulum, at the congress held for the first time in Paris. A sufficiently sensitive person, using dowsing, can analyse the energy of the body and in particular of the chakras. The “dowsing sense” is nothing “spiritistic”: it is a perfectly natural sense, latent in everyone and developed to varying degrees in many.

The person who practises dowsing is called a dowser. They are not a doctor: this means they are free to carry out their own investigations and studies on the state of the individual, but may not make diagnoses or prescribe medicines or specialist tests. Dowsing works through various tools such as the pendulum, the wooden rod, the Lecher antenna and the biotensor. These tools help to probe natural elements such as water and minerals, which can be useful in several fields, from agriculture to ecology, as well as for investigating the human body.

Medical radiesthesia, working on the etheric body, made of pure energies and light, aims to detect and recognise the energy imbalances that are the origin of any physical unease. Yogi masters teach that many energy centres can be recognised in the etheric body. The most important are the 7 chakras, the “vortices of energy” set along the axis of the spine: the base of the spine, the navel, the spleen, the heart, the throat, the eyebrows, the top of the head. Using a chart that represents them, the pendulum or other tool is passed over each one to determine whether the chakra is working well or is altered by excess or deficiency.

Examining the etheric body is considered important because illnesses are believed to show themselves first on the etheric plane and then on the physical one: this makes it possible to prevent and to choose an appropriate holistic approach. A practitioner with experience and sensitivity can examine a person even thousands of kilometres away.

What dowsing detects

Dowsing is a system for detecting and measuring subtle energies. All the elements that disturb and distort a person’s correct energy balance can be investigated through dowsing. It is therefore applied to the investigation, usually preventive, of a person’s energy health, in order to establish their vital level, the correct functioning of their chakras, their general state of health, their allergies and intolerances, their mind-body interaction, psychosomatic difficulties, and the nature and origin of their disorders.

Who is dowsing for?

Dowsing is intended for all those who wish to know their body consciously and to understand which energy dysfunctions lie at the origin of certain symptoms, which official and traditional medicine may not have been able to explain or has identified only in part. Like any other alternative practice, dowsing must be approached with common sense: it must never be understood as an alternative to a medical consultation, still less to a treatment. In the presence of illness, it is essential to follow the therapies prescribed by your doctor.

The law in Italy and abroad

In Italy dowsing is not formally forbidden by law, but neither is it regarded as a medical or scientific discipline. This means that the dowser, like any holistic practitioner, is free to offer consultations in compliance with consumer protection law. In no case may they guarantee specific results in terms of health, nor prescribe therapies.

Associations and reference bodies

The best-known dowsing association in Italy is AIR, Associazione Italiana Radiestesisti, founded to:

• encourage, support, direct and supervise research in all fields of dowsing;
• guide the study of dowsing on a rational basis;
• check and validate announced successes and arrange for their publication;
• officially represent Italian dowsing internationally.
